OK, now I am partially paralyzed and I work, full time. I understand where you are coming from, but I had been in a wheelchair for a little bit and could not work, I was disabled, had to take time off, some people just cannot work for whatever reasons. I know there are people using the system, but there are others that are in so much pain that there is no way they can work. I used to be one. I work all the time now, overtime also. Not everyone can hold down a job when they are disabled. There are too many people that are not disabled that cannot find work and there are alot of companies that do not hire handicapped people, I know that is wrong, but that is just the way some companies are and if you are not really up on the legal aspects those companies can get over on you. I am lucky, I have had this job for 20 years and am better able to get around now due to alot of therapy. Not everyone is going to have ambition, either. Everyone's situation is different and you really don't know what people go through unless you are able to walk in their shoes. I never thought I would be disabled, but hey that is life, I am just thankful I can work and hold down a job and am very ambitious, too, like you. Have a good day.

You are not really asking a question so much as making a personal statement. While I can agree, in general that everyone should and could work in an ideal world, we do not live in an ideal world. There are many who are lazy and live off the system. There are many who actually try to get ahead and only fall behind. There is a lot of prejudice against the disabled that keep them from being employed and the people shopping with food stamps are actually supporting farm subsidies, which actually keeps the price of food low for everyone. It is all interrelated. One program supports dozens more. Taking away one would topple a whole group and could actually cause a major economic crisis. Before you go complaining about the "poor" or the "disabled" recieving free housing and food and medical care, consider that the president and every member of congress, receive all three as well, at taxpayer expense and all will leave office, regardless of time served, with a guaranteed pension and health care for the rest of their lives. You migh also try living in welfare housing, shopping with food stamps and waiting in line for the free health care that is offered to get an idea of what it is the dissabled and unemployed really get.

"just to make ends "MEAT?" Oh well, aren't u special. You work even though you're entitled to get disability. Excuse me, but there are some people who have mental issues, that most of the work place could do without. Some people are better off not at work. The State in which they live pays them to stay home. There must be a reason for that. I don't think there are enough jobs, to put each and every individual to work. What about the congress, and the politicians whom by the way get taxpayers money to put on a suit and sit up in Washington doing nothing? Is that not welfare. True enough there are some lazy people.. But mostly some people really need the help. Then there are some who are perfectly able to work, they get housing and food stamps and cable. What the **** can we do about it?

The Welfare System was first started after WW2 to help the family's of Military Personnel who were killed or disabled and could no longer support their families. It was not meant to be a way for people not to work. But at the same time it penalizes people for working. Minimum wage is not enough to support a family, even if 2 people are working. The welfare system needs a complete overhaul. This Country needs more jobs. and better wages. we need to control inflation. Yes the welfare system needs fixed but everything else needs fixed too. If we put an end to welfare without fixing the other things first. Our homeless rate will jump through the roof, and more people (especially Children) will be starving.

Nearly 10% of the population are disabled. This does not mean people should be encouraged to take shelter under government schemes. All those who can work should work. But there are people who cannot work and those do not have facility or means of education. Many do not provide job for the disabled.
One must 70% disability emanates from rural areas due to poverty, ignorance and superstition as well as close affinity marriage.I feel Govt. should concentrate on eliminating poverty and disability. However some form of disability will be there and the most deserving ones never get any assistance.

Disabled people are just that: disabled. Being one of them, I guarantee the roof over my head is NOT free, I do not get Free food, and my health insurance costs me $65 per month and doesn't cover a whole lot.
I worked for over 25 years, and my disability check is MY money, from my SS witholding, I am just getting it early and in smaller increments. I am not lazy, I am sick. I did not choose to be ill and trust me, if I could change it, I would. You try raising a child and providing a good home on less than $1200 a month and then tell me I'm a freeloader, OK?

Glad to see that you are so superior over those of us who are lazy and using the system.
I am on disability, have been disabled since birth.I put myself through nursing school and worked as a nurse for over 20 years until my disability became a major problem. The money I get every month is money I earned and paid for with my taxes, you are not paying for a thing.I get no free housing,no food stamps,no free medical insurance.I pay for all of that out MY check, and believe me,after paying $750.00 a month for rent, there isn't much left to pay the rest of the bills.
I would love to be working,I miss it everyday.Until you walk in someone else's shoes, you have no right to judge. You could be in the same situation yourself, quicker than you know.

I don't begrudge the benefits paid to those who are truly disabled. In fact, I'm glad my tax dollars help them. The ones who just don't want to work drive me nuts. It also backs up the system to the point that some really disabled people acutally die before they can get a hearing. (Yes, they've been pushed through and denied to the point of having to ask for a hearing). It's really sad. There are people who have been waiting on a hearing for over a year.

I have two examples. Me, newly divorced and supporting three small children. I got some benefits to tide me over until I got paid better and eventually got off it.
My neice's boyfriend, who claims to be ADD and dyslexic and can't read or write. The government pays for his food and housing, but if he gets someone pregnant (which he has), they cannot collect child support because the gov't refuses to support a baby. (that's what his ex-girlfriend was told anyway).
So there you have two extremes. It's nice if you are in a jam and need it temporarily. But to make it your lifestyle is dishonest and just wrong. I guess what I'm saying is that it's right or wrong depending on the person getting it.

I almost agree with you 100% but I do feel that there are a few people that really do need help. But If these people are gonna get free everything ,I think they should have to do something for it..People on welfare can be made to go help old people, say clean there house,do laundry etc. Or clean the road ways. How about making them go to school and help out there...There are lots of things they could do...Just like people in prison...I am tired of all the taxes we have to pay for these people....God helps people who TRY to help themselves. But our government does a lot of things wrong, a little common sense would make right...
