After the second world war when men were returning home, women who had been employed were told they were no longer needed and told to give the job to men because they were the breadwinners. However many of the women working were in fact doing so to support children that had been made fatherless because of being killed in action. Do you see the dilemma that these women faced. They had to resort to poverty because they were only allowed to work in jobs that were historically low paying such as teaching or nursing. In fact nurses were not allowed to be married or they were let go as well.
Women were also not allowed to have access to birth control and consequently they were forced to endure many pregnancies at the cost of their own health. Margaret Sanger pioneered the birth control pills to try and alleviate some of this injustice.

Hmmm... Were a few historic events prior to WW2 that you should probably mention (ie getting the vote). John Stuart Mills (famous for 'On Liberty') also wrote 'the subjection of women', pointing out that women had less rights than slaves and would probably be worth looking up.

But yeah, the typical situation was that the men went off to fight, the women had to take over some of their jobs and then when they returned the women resented having to return to a sometimes limiting domestic life.

But of course women could be paid less money so could be used very economically to help build up the economy and so a working woman was no longer a rariety.

Then the swinging 60's.... political marches became common placed and people became more politically savvy. Women in particular realised that they were lacking rights that were fairly basic.... and so womens lib kicked off.

De Beauvoir was writing before the 70's tho and Mary Wollenstonecraft was before the turn of the century so the 1970s were arguable just a climax of events prior to this.

Good luck.

Yeah. I have it on good authority that Betty Friedan went back through the time hose and gave Hitler such a clumsy b*low job that he got all cheesed off and invaded Poland.

World war II was about the epic fight of good against evil.

Feminist movement of 70s was about casterating men and now as a precursor we have ballbusting.
