Man, if I could answer that question I wouldn't be here! There is a great deal of confusion in the cosmology world right now. It appears that there are 11 dimensions! A good book on the topic is "Warped Passages" by Lisa Randall.

As others have said (correctly), it is not known. By measuring the energy density of the universe some astronomers believe they can determine if the universe is open (that is, infinite) or closed (essentially, a 4-dimensional ball - any other dimensions are too small to matter)

But, whether it is or not is of theoretical interest only. The universe is expanding, and the expansion is accelerating. If you set off from the earth now at the speed of light, the fastest speed possible, you could never reach the border of the visible universe because it is expanding too fast. So, whether outside the part that is theoretically accessible or not is closed or open makes no practical different - you cannot set out in one direction in a space ship and return from the other.

Greene's book, The Fabric of the Cosmos, is a really good and understandable source for information on this type of subject.

Of the great atom (universe) finite in its dimension and the infinite in its time : That it is divided in three energies: Prótons, Elétrons and Nêutrons. In the sun, it was the positive power (Prótons), but with the negative return (electrons). In the Interstellar system, it was the negative power (electrons), but with the positive return (Prótons). In what it says respect to the land, was with the responsibility of the Nêutrons, acting the end to unbalance the positive and negative forces in its related limits. Thus, it neutralizes the start and the extremity. The energies that come of the place for where to go, and go for the place of where they come. As the diagram of Tarcísio Brito (...).

Einstein said " Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and he was not to sure about the latter.

The universe is infinite only if you can reach the edge and always go one more foot.

sort of: the boundaries of space are infinite, however, the matter within that space only extends a finite distance.
