Design, pure design is mathematics. Your mind is the greatest math interpolative design engine in existence.
If you study colors, what is monochromatic, the colorwheel, the frequency of colors, structure, measures, etc. it will be easier for you to think in terms of style.
There are creative thoughts regarding setting style, but really that is just taking something that does not exist in popular use, and making it popular. Even creative designs, new, etc, are from a mind that can interpolate the design. So, through the arts we feel the science. The art is our mind interpolating what we have learned, and it allows us to feel the science, without explaining it.

Nothing to do with mathematics: design concerns function, style concerns fashion, visual appeal, pleasentness.
