water bottles are supposed to keep cats and or dogs away. if you question your neighbors you might find they have seen yeti and ufos as well.

First, it's not spiritual or anything like that. Do the neighbors have in-ground sprinkler systems (PVC pipe, values, etc.). If so, then small jars may be there to measure the amount of water they are using. They don't want to over spend on water for the turf.

Jenny's idea about slugs liking beer also makes sense, but I would put the jars in the back corners of the planting beds, not the lawn. Slugs and snails do go for beer.

You didn't say where you live or whether the jars are always full. If you live in a desert-like area (including So. California) and the jars are sometimes empty, then my guess is a pretty good one.

I dont know about water but I have used jars of beer in and around my yard and walkway during summer to catch and kill slugs. They like the beer and the yeast in it expands and kills the slugs with no mess except in the jar.

It is said that by putting jars or zip lock bags of water around your yard that it keeps flys away. It is said that they precieve it to be a hornets nest so they stay away
