Goldfish in a fish bowl don't ever grow big, but the ones in the canal do. I always figured it had to do with the amount of water, but somebody informed me it was the depth and the water pressure that made the difference. Which, if either, is it?

It all has to do with how clean the water is. If kept in a bowl that was cleaned everyday and the fish always had nice clean water it would out grow the bowl in no time, they usually die though because people don't clean it. But if kept in something bigger like a canal, pond or even the correct size tank for the goldfish they not only have more water so it doesn't get dirty as fast as a little bowl but people who give the fish what they need as in the amount of water also usually clean the tank like they should.

When they are in something like a small tank or bowl without a filter and isn't cleaned like it should and they don't grow it's not their way of adapting, they are actually becoming stunted. It is where their outsides stop growing but their insides don't and they become more and more cramped until the fish dies from it. I have read before that they release a hormone into the water and that is what causes them to stunt, which is why it is important to do weekly (or more if the tank is overstocked) water changes.

Fancy goldfish, common goldfish, and koi are 3 different types of fish. They are all types of carp, but have different needs. Fancy goldfish usually grow round and not quite as long, maybe 6-10 inches and as big around as a softball. Common Goldfish get about 10-12 inches long, but can get bigger (there are some in lake tahoe right now that are 18+ inches). Koi can easily reach 3+ feet long and live for hundreds of years. (The oldest Koi was 226 years old)

Its neither depth or water pressure. In a small amount of water toxins build up quickly and make the fish unhealthy.

i dont know about those reasons..but i know most fish will only grow as big as the habitat they live in will allow.

a goldfish in a bowl cant grow to be a foot long like one in a lake could.
