my alternative favorites are panic! at the disco and fall out boy, but they're pretty mainstream so I'm sure you've heard of them.
however, a genre im much more familiar with which is really similar to alternative is punk rock.. the good kind.
i really love green day, the sex pistols, the ramones, and so on. good luck!
