One by one, the jurors begin to switch their votes, with even the racist #10 having to concede that there wasn't enough evidence to convict. Eventually juror #3 is the last holdout. He begins to scream at the other 11 for allowing the defendant to get away with killing his own father and for ignoring the evidence. As he takes out notes he took at the trial from his wallet a picture of #3 with his son falls to the table for the others to see. In a fury, #3 begins to scream about "lousy kids" and it becomes clear that he has had a falling out with his son. He begins to tear the picture to pieces and then breaks down crying, sobbing "not guilty, not guilty" through his tears. As they leave the jury room, #3, who is still shaken, is helped to his feet by #8, thereby implying that he does not feel that what took place during the deliberations should be taken personally by anyone.

The eventual result is a vote of 12-0 in favor of acquittal, and the jurors leave the room to present their verdict to the court. What happens in the courtroom after that is left to the imagination of the viewers. In the final scene, as they are going down the courthouse steps toward the street, Juror #9 calls to Juror #8 and asks for his name. They introduce themselves to each other (Juror #9 is "McCardle", Juror #8 is "Davis"—the only 'named' jurors in the entire movie), say goodbye, and go their separate ways.
