It's been a few years since Ive done this stuff but here's what I did.
2.59 = X + (X+1.79)

2.59 - 1.79 = .80 and then 1.79 - 1.79 = 0

leaving me with .80 = x + (x)

so .80 = x?

I'm confused, am I right though?

You're right up to the last step. x+(x) is the same as x+x=2x. Setting that = to .80, we get:

.8=2x
Dividing by 2,
.4=x (or if you're dealing with money, 40 cents)

Solve for "x" > 2.59 = x + (x + 1.79)

First: eliminate parenthesis - rewrite the expression without the parenthesis.

2.59 = x + x + 1.79

2.59 = 2x + 1.79

The equation can also be written as...

2x + 1.79 = 2.59

Sec: combine "like" terms - subtract "1.79" from both sides (when you move a term to the opposite side, always use the opposite sign).

2x + 1.79 - 1.79 = 2.59 - 1.79

2x = 2.59 - 1.79

2x = 0.8

Third: isolate "x" on one side - divide both terms by "2"....

2x/2 = (0.8)/2

x = (0.8)/2

x = 0.4

not quite. close. you can get rid of the () since by distributing the 'invisible 1.' Therefore, you're left with:
2.59 = x + x + 1.79

subtract out 1.79
.8 = x + x

add the x's
.8 = 2x

divide out the two
.4 = x
that's youre answer

2.59 = X + X + 1.79
2.59 = 2X + 1.79
2.59 - 1.79 = 2X
0.8 = 2X
X = 0.4

you are not quite right, if 0.8=x+(x)
then 0.8=2x
and therefore 0.4=x
Unfortunately, I suck at explanations so you will have to wait for someone else's answer.

.8=x+(x)=2x
so x=.8/2=.4
x=.4 or 0.4
