You can be lonely even when you are with a group of friends. It's a feeling of emptiness or isolation from the world around you. It's a sense of being apart from others on a really profound level.

you could just be one of those people who has a pack mentality. You feel better when you are a part of something rather than in solitutde.

It's hard to answer your question without more of a background for you.

Write down some of your thoughts when you are alone. You might see how smart you are, and how interesting you are, when there are not outside influences keeping you from your own thoughts.

Use your alone time to write in a journal, and you'll feel useful while at the same time exploring thoughts you would never be able to do with another person there.

You know why and you are the only one that knows. The question is how do you deal with it. I suggest that you find someone that you trust and talk about it HONESTLY, with out deceiving yourself. If this is not an option there are mental health professionals that will help you. You have admitted a problem, now deal with it.

Something happened to you when you were little that scared you in the dark. Go to a therapist that does hypnosis. Then you can find out what it is that scared you and be able to overcome this fear. Also talk to your parents about it.They may be able to shed some light on this.

This was my situation...but today I can sleep alone in a dark room all by myself.
Well it takes some guts to begin with...it also takes practice .
One can overcome fears by facing them ..they are mostly imaginary .
Fears are necessary and live in our unconscious and save us from adversity . However it is necessary to overcome irrational fears ... and try not to depend on crutches . You may secure your room and convince yourself that you are physically safe..then you only have to overcome your personal fears.Well and who better to solve them than yourself ?

You have never grown up. So grow up or get yourself a stuffed animal to sleep with, if you are looking for any other kind of company I am not sure what to tell you.

Do you realize that you aren't appreciating the only companion that you will have for the rest of your life? Someone wrote once that "I've never had a companion so companionable as solitude". Attempt a spiritual journey. What can it hurt?

YOUR ARE ACTUALLY NOT AFRAID, YOU HAVE THE NEED TO FEEL SECURE. AND WHEN SOMEONE IS IN THE ROOM YOU FEEL THE WARMTH OF ANOTHER, WHICH IS ONLY FELT, WITH THEIR PRESENSE. THERE ARE A FEW QUIT HELPFUL REMEDIES. PUT A PICTURE OF A LOVED CLOSE TO YOUR SLEEPING AREA AND FIND A VERY NICE COMFORTABLE BLANKET IN YOUR FAVORITE COLOR. AND WATCH A COMEDY BEFORE BEDTIME. NITE NITE

Maybe you do not like who "you" are. By being alone it gives you time to reflect on nothing but you and your feelings. Perhaps it would behoove you; (being alone) therefor, you can get to know the real you and your underlying issues.
