why is charlie supposed to die?

desmond has saved him twice, the story about charlie dying to save claire from drowning doesn't hold water, how could charlie have gotten out there before desmond, the lost writers are slipping

I absolutely hated this episode!! It did nothing to advance the Lost storyline in my opinion. If I had to guess, I'd say Desmond keeps saving Charlie because he knows what's coming in the future and knows that Charlie is needed to stop or prevent whatever it is. BTW, this episode had the worse TV ratings ever for a Lost show.
