Call him, "Jake" and tell people he's your new pet dog only because you couldn't afford one. =o)
My daughter had a beta she named, "Cuddles". This was a fishy from the darkest recesses of hell.
A fly lit on the edge of Cuddles' bowl - and this fish zipped up out of the water and snagged that fly with lightning speed!
Another instance.., the old yellow tom cat perched over the bowl, watching Cuddles, while envisioning a choice meal. Suddenly Cuddles torpedoed his self out out of the water and darted the old tom cat right in the nose. The cat needless to say was so startled, he leaped in the air doing a 360 turnabout and was gone! He never approached Cuddles again.
