If it's a knock near the top of the engine, it could have a stuck/sticky intake valve that is tapping on the top of the piston.

Aside from the knocking, does it run good, or does it seem to have an engine miss?

Could be a main bearing also slipped too.

If the knocking doesn't go away after it runs for five or ten minutes at idle, I'd pass on buying it.

Might need oil. When a car sits for a long time all the oil, transmission fluid will drain to the lowest place.
Ask the person if he cares that you take it to a tec to have them check it out.If this up sets them chances are they know the car has a problem. You can also ask the owner if they know of a problem. Sometimes they will tell you the truth. Be sure to watch how they act. For this you have to know how to read a person.
Good luck.

Serious this time. Any knocking is a symptom of something hitting that shouldn't be. If the seller won't repair it don't buy unless you know exactly what the cause is and how much it will cost to repair. Any of the usual knocking noises are not cheap to cure except for pinking which will only happen under acceleration/load.

the knock is the samshaft bouncing up and down in its carrier, as the oil pump isnt working well enough to get the oil to the cylinder head... flush the system, and refill it with decent oil.

of course it was fine when the previous owner stopped driving it (allegedly) they always are...

people only sell cars for a reason..trouble is no one is prepared to tell you the truth, because your going to run away screaming...

if youre concerned, get an AA or RAC engineer to do a check, it costs 80 quid...but itll stop you buying a lemon.

All cars for sell were fine the last time it was used. Sounds like it might have a rod knocking. That's not good.

being sitting that long, the oil has probably drained away from the bearings.it could be a rod knocking.if it is,then you could put a new connecting rod back in,if the cylinder wall isnt scarred.

se how the oil change history was or the oil drained down and you had a dry engine
