He is a writer of fiction for children and young adults. He wrote a series The Old Kingdom (consisting of Sabriel, Lirael and Abhorsen) set in a fictional world where magic is commonplace. A further short story (The Creature in the Case) was released for World Book Day a few years ago.
He is currently working on a series of seven books, The Keys to the Kingdom, in which a young human Arthur Penhaglion must save his world by defeating seven enemies who live in a mysterious house to which Arthur has the key. Arthur is the heir to the house although the seven days have taken control. It is up to Arthur to rescue the seven parts of the Will and take his place as the rightful heir. The action of each book takes place in the course of a single day, which the book (and denizen) is named after. Currently 4 books have been published (Mister Monday, Grim Tuesday, Drowned Wednesday and Sir Thursday) with the fifth, Lady Friday, to be published in the nextfew weeks.
Finally he has written some stand-alone books: The Ragwitch (a horror-fantasy novel where a young boy must save his sister from the evil of the Ragwitch), Shades Children (futuristic sciece fiction where children are condemned to die before their 14th birthday) and Across the Wall (a book of short stories, includes The Creature in the Case).
