If you are working, you may be entitled to Tax credits to top up your income. If you want to claim Jobseeker's Allowance this is done on the basis of the Contributions you have paid, or your income. If you are unable to work look at Incapacity Benefit, or Income Support. If you do not have a National Insurance Number, when making a claim to benefit, the relevant department arrange an appointment for you. Go into a Social and ask.

it all depends on what your citizen status is? British? work visa? studying? asylum seeker?
to qualify for any benefits paid by the DWP then you must first register for a national insurance number but if you are an asylum seeker it will be dependent on the home office (immigration) papers which decide on NAS35 support and immigration status i.e whether you are entitled to receive public funds.
you would be best to contact any local Department of Social Security or Jobcentre Plus and speak to a benefit advisor or look on the DWP homepage on net, hope this helps a little.
