How about being an exchange student? It is a lot more fun! being an au pair is a lot of work and you never know what kind of kids you will gets, what if the family has no discipline for the kids? You also don't get to interact that much with people your age.
Try "Youth for Understanding" or "EF" or other similar program, I had a wonderful experience!

I have 2 friends that did this, and they both had a great time! They made lots of new friends and improved their English. Both were sad when they had to leave, but have great memories from it.
