in the early 1950s The US CIA overthrew the Iranian Prime minister Mohammed Mossadegh. They did this to return the western friendly anti-soviet Shaw (a second generation military dictator) to power. The Shaw's regime was over thrown in 1979 by the Mullahs. These are historical fact you can look them up.
So the US overthrow of a popular elected government in the fifties eventually led to the backlash which allowed radicals to gain control of Iran in the late 70ties.
Why did the US overthrow the Iranian government? We were in a war with the soviets (they say cold war, but it was pretty Hot!) and the Soviet and the NATO side both did things which don't make sense in today's world. And, unfortunately continue to have major negative consequences today.
The current landscape of the world ( and much more so in the middle east) is shaped by the past. This past involved European colonialism and the so called "Cold War". Most of the modern countries in this region were created by Europeans (I think all except Iran were created by European colonialism). Certainly, Israel and Iraq are inventions of the Brits
Iraq citizens could not control the actions of a megalomaniac dictator. And so Hussein killed millions of Iranians 80ies. However, a free and Democratic Iraq would not have attacked Iran and would not be a threat to the US.
We need a democratic citizen controlled Iraq to reduce threats to ourselves. It is also in Iran's interest (the people of Iran not the current radical government) to have a rational democratic government in Iraq (and all of its neighbors).
Bush is not in a global struggle with the Soviets. And I believe he genuinely believes that free democratic countries are much less of a treat to the US.
So My answer to your question: Our self interest requires all people of the world to control their governments and be responsible for its actions. I.e. democracy.
To achieve this we have to undo a lot of the bad things we and the Europeans did in the last 2 centuries. Among these are converting the dictatorships which we installed for our own interest to democracies. And we hope that the radical governments that arose to counter outside meddling will become more moderate and help this democratizations process.

believe me its just a game and we all their victims.there is no democracy and freedom in this world not in Iraq or Iran or even US,they're just deceiving us to hate each other. Mullahs are deceiving people by their religion, religion that they created by themselves and doesn't really exist.
