The bible was a history book. The Jewish people were the first to keep a history, that was what the bible was. If you find god in it, then good for you, if you treat it as a history book and a great story about a way to live, then good for you too.
In other words, take from it what you will.

Before voting this down, do a little research, don`t be afraid, I will NOT tell your Pastor! If you had mentioned the fact that the Greeks played a big role in reporting, recording and interpreting the Bible story, then we could puzzle how `truth`depended on a volatile culture riddled with myths, supernatural fiction, and fabulous superstition. You are correct in stating that education was lacking, the MAJORITY of 1st century Palestinians were illiterate, as were their rulers!

You have to read the bible to fine the truth and it is there, but a lot of it has been twisted by man, who has used it to brainwash and control others.
There are lots of things that are stated in the bible which can be proved to a point, for example, there are facts that a man did excise who done the things that Jesus did and around that time I can't remember his name, but it is said he is the same man, but of course no one can prove he was the son of God.
There are many things that have been poorly translated, and not corrected such as in the Hebrew text there was no such person as the virgin Mary, the words were a young woman, and if you go back to Adam and Eve it is hard to believe this, but I have an opinion on this, if you were to try and explain evolution to someone thousands of years ago they would not understand so why not make up a story about two people called Adam and Eve this they would understand, and i do still believe that God created us all, they say in his image, but what is his image, he is not a being he is more energy which is inside us all.
So its a lot of both really.

The bible is made out of many books. all these books were written by men with some agenda, and not necessarily the same agenda, and whatever facts they had were sometimes distorted by their agenda.
more than that, many parts of the bible contain ancient Myths, that were modified to suit the ideas and goals of the people who edited these myths, before including them in the bible.
other parts of the bible are abbreviated history books, containing the stories of religious and warrior leaders, but again they represent the truth as one side saw it.
so the bible is a mishmash of facts, myths and distortions, all for a good purpose (if you agree with the agenda of it's many editors)

I believe that a lot of the things in the bible actually happened, so it is part non fiction, I don`t buy all that spiratual crap, and you have to take into consideration, when king james had the bible translated, he had the translators change some of the things in the original manuscript, such as originaly written as God so loved the world he gave "a" son to die for our sins, changed to For god so loved the world he gave "his only begotten son" the original makes referance to all mankind being sons and dauters of god, but king james changed it to say jesus is the ONLY son.

How much of the initial 'true' bible really exists? It has been re-written, changed and altered and so many times, i doubt very much any of it is true.
Personally i think the bible, rewritten or not was a form of control, laying the laws down, and i dont believe any of it.
I'm not religous in the slightest and never intend to be.
Unless God or Jesus appears to me, i consider it a load of garbage, then and only then will i change my opinion.
I dont oppose those who believe in, or follow religion, just dont knock on my door!

Am a born Roman Catholic but not a practising one. Have studied Apologetics and read History of the Catholic Church which is banned for Catholics, by the Pope ofcourse.
Bible is a collection of books. Collated to suit hierarchy of that time. A hierarchy that held the belief 'the earth is flat' and tormented Galileo for saying otherwise and apologised for it 450 years later, two years back. This shows the true situation where women are suppressed at every turn and sins of priests go overlooked and unpunished.
In the story of creation, it is said, God cursed the snake (satan) 'you will crawl on your stomach and eat dirt for the rest of your life'.............that means the snake was jumping about on its tail previous to the 'curse'.
Read and expand your knowledge and mind ... but please read with some insight ... like they say: anything that shines is not gold, anything that is printed is not truth............thank you.

The Bible is total fiction. Its a collection of myths, stolen from every other ancient middle-eastern civilization and society.
Most of the Old Testament is political propaganda written at the time of King Josiah, who wanted to justify his usurping the throne. Books were edited and/or rewritten to suit Josiah's agenda.
The New Testament is a collection of books that fitted Paul's philosophy of how the Christian church should be. All the books that didn't fit Paul's ideals were cut out and burned.
And this is what modern western civilization is built on; the political writings from between 2,600 to 1,940 years ago. Scary, huh?

I would say it should be non-fiction, as it is a collection of stories, these stories are a persons account of an event which actually happened. However, over the years the stories have been changed, misinterpreted, and twisted, and very few factual parts remain.

As a collection of stories - none of which totally sync with the others, I have to say fiction. Most of it isn't even believable or well written. The exception being Psalms, which is only a collection of poetry.
