To promote a book, a publisher sends copies of it to famous writers, journalists, and university professors with the hope they would read and comment on the book. If they do, the publisher would take one or two lines of the comment and place it on the back cover of the book. Pick up any hard cover book, and you will see someone's opinion on the back cover. Usually that person with the opinion is well known. Publishers do this because they know people in book stores often pick up the book and look at the cover. If the customer sees a quote about the book from someone famous, most likely the customer would give serious consideration in buying the book.
