I assume you wat your laptop to access your other pc via a shared folder.
1. Open up windows Explorer on your desktop
2. Right click on the folder you wat to share. select sharing and security.
3. Click the share and give it a name. remember this for later.
4. Go to security, select add and type in everyone, give full control (You can change this later).
5. go to laptop, open Up WIndows explorer, goto tools, map network drive.
6. Select a drive letter you want to allocate to the connection.
7. type in ipaddress of your desktop and the share name.. You can find this out my clicking start on your desktop and typing cmd. In the dos windows type ipconfig. You address will probably be 192.168.1.2
8. The remote user now has full access to that folder. You can tie security down later, its up to you.
9. You can also share a printer in much the similar way.
10. Hope this works.
Make sure you type it in this format. \\192.168.1.2\share name

I popped down to our local computer shop and they reccommended a Router which only cost me £60 for the wires and routers (a company I phoned was going to charge me nearly £300 to come and do it) all I had to do was register the router's mac address with my ISP, wait an hour then connect it all up. I am not sure what ISP you are with I am with NTL/Telewest and the person on the phone was very helpful with me although at that time they didnt support networking they were trying to get me to fork out another monthly fee for another connection but that was 3 yrs ago I dont know how it all works now

I'm presuming that you are both using the same operating system and that you have already set up network identification.
The following article will help you share a network folder.
If you could provide more information I could help with a step by step guide. Unfortunately your opening question does not provide enough information.

so are both PCs networked using the same broadband connection, is your internet connection shared on one connected or des the other pc just wireless to the router, if so u may have to get a network hub or use a network cable crossover cable to phsyically connect the two PCs
