I think the most beautiful failed french campaigns are :
the mexican campain (napoleon III in the 19th century)
and the Italian wars (François the first in 16th century, but this king was not idiot like Bush and he brought back Leonardo DaVinci in his case toward France after the defeat...)

Napoleon didn't do so well when he invaded Russia.
He seriously underestimated the Russians, and got caught short, by the winter. That, and he overstretched his supply lines.
I'm not putting this up to add credence to anyone's cause.
Feel free to believe what you want to believe. It's all politics, to me, and someone else's, at that.
I'm putting this up because I think it's a crying shame that people don't know about really big historical events like Napoleon's retreat. Maybe it's just me that thinks it's important.

Actually, history shows us that the defeat (if we do) like Vietnam the U.S. Congress and the left which is in power which beats the defeat drum before the effort is done and retreats becomes the the cause of the defeat. Imagine pulling out of Normandy on June 6th in WW II for political gain as we are now by one party.
