For a pitcher, lefties are a popular commodity. Most teams would love a good lefty, especially if he can throw heat. If he wants to play another position, I'd suggest first base.

Don't expect the pro scouts to come calling just yet, after all he is just a Freshman. Left handed pitching is a priority for MLB scouts. If he is good they will be around during his senior season. When I played, scouts from at least 10 teams came to see one of my teammates pitch because he was a good high school lefty. He didn't get drafted, but the scouts showed up.

College coaches will send someone to scout him a little earlier, to see if they can get him to play at the next level. I have seen guys scouted during their Sophomore year for college ball. There is a lot better chance to earn a scholarship for college than to get drafted into MLB.

Yeah, people love to find lefties, and if you can pitch and hit, that leaves teams more options, and you can play wherever you want. Adam Laroche, a lefty/lefty could have been drafted earlier as a pitcher, but wanted to play every day, hes doing pretty good now. people want lefties, because they are harder for people to hit against, ptich too, and are a rare occurence. I was an average player in high school, but was able to get some offers for college because of the fact that i was a fast lefty hitter.

A very good chance!! Good left handers are a rare comodity. College scouts will be around first, as the word circulates the big boys will begin to show interest. Most of the starting lefties in mlb Are way over paid because there just aren't enough to go around! Good luck to your lefty!!

Good size.. being a lefty is to his advantage too.. I was in the same boat as a kid. back surgery took care of any chances of playing ball. I wasn't 6' in height. Hoping our son does the same thing. He's 5'10" and in 8th grade.. Good speed, strength and glove.. He was hitting over 300' on a traveling team at 12. Scouts usually come out often.. Talk to your sons coaches.. I'm sure if they have connections.. It's all about networking..

Scouts love big lefties, especially since he's still pretty young and there's time to mold him.

It depends on what school he plays for, too. Schools with better records are more likely to get scouted. If he plays for a no-name, low division team with a crappy record, his chances of being scouted are goin down.

And it's not just about his speed, so make sure he keeps himself healthy, in shape, and keep him playin durin the off season. Does he have good control? Can he hit his spots? What's his ERA look like? BA/pit?

If he keeps his stats up and keeps his name known, he's got a good shot. :)

Good chance. Be sure he gets to some of the major camps for high school students, too. That way, he'll get noticed by college scouts and pro scouts alike.

Also be sure to teach him how to take care of himself through strength and endurance training, flexibility training, hand-eye coordination exercises, proper nutrition, etc. That will help him stand out a lot.
