A self-cleaning oven heats up hot enough to burn away any residue of food that might build up on its inside. Many models, especially older ones, generate a lot of heat, which can be hazardous. To be safe, only self-clean when you can keep the windows open and everyone out of the kitchen.
It shouldn't be necessary to remove metal racks from the oven, but doing so might not be a bad idea.

A self cleaning oven is not dangerous any more than being on at any other time, it locks with a Handle on the top front of the door,or you set it with a button on the timer , it heats up to cook away any food spilled in the oven- unless the racks are real dirty, take them out, as they will no longer slide if you leave them in.
Turn on the Vent Hood and crack open a window for draft. It takes about 3 hours.

I have handled self-cleaning ovens before, in my job as a housekeeper.
You will want to take the racks out. But a self-cleaning oven should have a kind of lock on it that won't let anyone in it when it's cleaning, so it should be perfectly safe- or at least, no more dangerous than it is other times.

A self cleaning oven heats to over 800 degress and burns all food residue to ash. Although the fumes are considered harmless to people, it is best to air out the house while this 2 to 4 hour operation is in progress. If you vent above your range exhausts out of the house leave it on for the entire process. Otherwise, save this project till spring when you can open the windows. **NOTE** the fumes are harmful to some pets. It will kill pet birds!!! Also, if you leave the racks in they will oxidize and turn gray. It won't hurt the metal but it will make them look dingy.

self-cleaning oven uses high temerature to render most everything left in there to ash. That way all you have to do is wipe it down with a damp cloth. It's a good idea to run the exhaust fan while you do this. It takes an hour or two depending on what's spilled in there. Yes leave the racks in and,Yes keep the kids away from the kitchen. It's really hot.

It heats up really hot, liek over 500 degrees and bakes off all the crap that is stuck to the inside. You dont have to remove the racks if they are dirty. But I find that if I leave mine in they dont slide in and out as well after, they need lubricating. If the oven is really dirty it will make some smoke and smell bad, but its not harmful as far as I know. Its good to do in winter because it heats up house so much, but if you hate the smoke and smell its hard to open windows or doors!
