I do not know of any self catering hotels in egypt and i know most of the larger hotels in luxor, and most of them operate on bed and breakfast and as there are many restaurants in luxor i think this is probably quite sensible as it is generally cheaper to eat in the smaller restaurants. i do understand that these hotels are not necassarily what you are looking for but to go any lower in star rating than a 3 is to put the standards below that which most of us are used to. There is one other option, i know a lady in luxor who owns a villa with 2 flats and a swimming pool, i do not know her number off hand but can easily get it for you if you would like just send me a message.
But i would seriously recommend, especially if you are travelling with children that you stay in the best hotel you can afford. And do not go lower than 3 star, the tut hotel or st jospehs are probably the cheapest hotels and not too bad. They are 3 star i believe. Package tours to luxor if taken during school term time are very cheap but if you go in holidays prices rocket of course. If you are thinking of going between April and October think carefully it gets incredibly hot and although i have been many times in this time i have not had young children with me. the novotel and mercurie inn are also low star and ok gaddis also is ok. but to be honest there is not a huge difference in price between these hotels and the more expensive ones such as the sheraton, the sonesta and others. but the standards and rooms are of a higher quality with the sonesta being in my opinion the best. the sheraton, movenpic and hilton being a little off the beaten track and quieter also the sofitel karnak ( but not as nice as the others.) my personal fav is the sheraton. ther are also many others.
for restaurants try 7 days 7 ways ok. maxims best fillet stak i have had. jems and many others ( these three are all near the sheraton. The restaurants in the sheraton and sonesta and also very good
flights from the uk are around 5 and half hours direct to luxor but normally only on a monday or wednesday. Or you have to fly indirectly. It is usually as cheap to book with someone like cosmos or portland direct as it is to try to book independantly.
any more question just ask. I love luxor and go there often, dont miss the noblemans tombs or the workmans village ( choose only one if you have young children) also medinet habu, fantastic place. have fun

dont think of u will locate something for a tenner a head. maximum inexpensive place i understand of is stated as Abbey lodge. its in significant brighton placed abbey lodge brighton into yahoo seek and u gets it. otherwise ther e are some decrease priced motels like queens lodge and guesthouses yet they're a minimum of 20 consistent with guy or woman consistent with evening if its weekend then it's going to be greater and maximum places have min 2 evening stay over weekend.
