Spoken stories change each time they are told. People like to add their own twist to it, or they forget some parts of the story so they make up their own, or they misunderstand a part of the story...or leave parts out. Stories that are written down can't be changed. Usually written stories are copyrighted by the author and publisher so nobody can change it or claim it as their own.

The ones written are created by an author called writer, in most cases and they have copyright.
While the spread by mouth stories are based on history real facts and they don't have copyright.
