Actually if you want to burn a material it should contain , Carbon or Hydrogen ,
Hydrogen Present as a gas and you cannot see the flame itself and also smoke

And all the other material we are burning will contain Carbon in its molecule .

When you try to burn these material - if this carbon burnt completely you cannot find any smoke

If you observe any smoke . then that means an incomplete combustion of the carbon.

Smoke is not the product of burning but is the fuel for combustion. Wood, paper and so on do not burn. What really happens is they get hot and out-gas. When those gasses mix with oxygen and in the presence of enough heat they combust.

When something continues to smoke it means that one of the ingredients for combustion is not present, usually not enough heat but in some cases it can be lack of oxygen too.
