Australia has such less population and Australians play many sports

The fact is Australia has a far better Sporting culture than India because Australians spend a lot of time, energy, money and passion on the Games. Cricket and Rugby are popular games in Australia wih Rugby more popular I guess, so they do produce very seasoned players at the International circuit.
India on contrast, doesn't have a Sporting culture except for Cricket - so is Pakistan and Sri Lanka - Hockey was once very popular in India but commercialisation of Cricket has killed the interests of the people here - and in Hockey, Aussies are again playing better than Indian present underfunded team.
Money makes all the difference. Even in Olympics, Australia with such a small population you say, is reaping much more medals than India -

Australia no doubt is the best team in cricket both in Tests and ODI. But despite this the Australians give good respect for Indian team both in Test matches and ODIs cos Indian players(especially Sachin) have belted the best Aussiebowler Shane Warne to all corners of the field. Remember Warnie telling the media that he found Sachin the most difficult batsman to bowl at. Not everyday that the underdogs get past the favourites, but when they do they are noticed and that is what India has done with the Aussies.
