From a scientific standpoint NO. #1) Creating a tool that demonstrates that level of power in such a small device is beyond our technology. #2) if we were capable of producing enough power in such a small device we lack the ability to limit it stock. For example a ,lightsaber is approximately 1 meter in length. The closest technology that we have to lightsabers are lasers. The only problem is we do not know how to limit a laser beam so that it only extend by a meter or so. So we have some very real challenges to making a device such as a lightsaber. The key to remember......people thought the world was round........people said that we would never fly.........I expect that there is enough people out there that eventually we will create such a device.........probably not in our lifetime though

The problem is that once the power of light has been harnessed the most dangerous part will be the tip and not the sides as in a light saber. Million dollar question -- how do you limit the travel of the laser with out reducing the power? In the future may have weapons like light sabers but they will be more like light laser pointers on steroids instead of swords.
May the force be with you.

Highly doubt it. I was reading in a time magazine article about Star Wars and they were talking about the hypothetical design of a light saber. That design included using a crystal of some sort to focus energy in the form of a beam. I don't think light can be harnessed like that.

No, because in the movies, they are made with a jewel and the Jedi's connection to the Force as the power source. We haven't even discovered if anything like the Force exists yet.

I have to think probably not... I hate to say categorically NO, because who knows what kind of technology might emerge in the future but the laws of physics tell me its really unlikely that something like a light sabre could ever be made, sorry its a bummer I know, they're just soooo damn COOL!!

they might its purely its tricky to maintain means like lazers and gentle-weight to stay in a controlled area thats why the toys consistently have plastic tubes so the sunshine wont bypass like 50 ft interior the air or some thing.

Yes, technically. But stabilizing the beam is the problem. They are working on it at MIT. It should be ready by 2015.

it is possible to invent tat kind of thing. i think there are scienctist who have invented that kind of light saber but just keep it low as a top secret device.
