My aunty went for her pap smear...?

She goes every 3 years, but this time it was painful for her. The nurse said to her that her cervix was closed and she couldn't open it. But i thought they didn't open your cervix. Did she mean it was closed completely so she couldn't get the 'wand' in? Would she have actually opened her cervix? Or do you think she meant she was having trouble opening her vagina?
