I believe the indifference you are referring to is, non-conformity.
A harsh reality is that life is a struggle. We set goals and work,
even fight, to achieve them. Alice in wonderland is a good scenario. Alice' goal was to catch the white rabbit. In her pursuit she encountered many obstacles that corrected her and checked her.
As we go through our days we learn and grow intellectually, emotionally and become more confident in ourselves.
The person who distances them self from problems, ignores the important things in life and becomes stagnant in their way of thinking and reasoning. They are still fighting, only their fight is to avoid many of life responsibilities. In most cases this can make a person contrary to what is seen by most as the normal way of life. They many times become belligerent towards change.
They struggle against evolution itself on an individual scale. Look around you, everything is changing and it is natural that we change with it. That awkward resistance towards natural intellectual and emotional growth is what makes them appear indifferent.
Calm waters run deep. Though it appears calm on the surface, underneath is constant change. Motionless waters run the risk of becoming useless.
