They are mainly caused by your fears against the possibilities of it, if real life doesn't make it happen then your dreams will as some sort of subconscious paranoia. Many factors or combinations of it may trigger these such as temperature, a low frequency sound, your situation, fever, images, and other innate causes. Another type of this is a nightmare where you can't move while your mind is awake. One big help is practising realizing when you have a nightmare that you are undergoing a nightmare. That awareness will make you awake consequently. If you experience cataplexy (immobility) then try to jerk, if not successful repeat the process but don't exert to much force while you are experiencing immobile panic for it causes death to some people. Best secret, while having a nightmare, realize you are having it, relax, and jerk to awake you safely.

Eating somewhat heavily within 1/2 hours before going to bed will cause nightmares as well.

nothing. Your mind keeps playing your "dreams" no matter what conditions. Some we like (good dreams) and some we don't (nightmares). Its all relative. being locked in a room, tied up with freddy mercury is my nightmare, yet someone elses dream. Its all relative.
