I think if you've been raised in modern society (friends+family in modern society) it'll be pretty hard to opt out. It's omnipresent, and I think most people, being raised in modern society, would be reluctant to leave it, so you might be alone in your attempt to opt out. The thing is, it is becoming harder (especialy in industrialized areas) to escape the prying govt., taxes, andstill have food, money, shelter. To escape the govt./taxes, you'd have to move to some rural, underdeveloped place far from Westernization and far from your expectations. What we've experienced when we were little has great bearing on what we expect of society: if we are raised in modern society, it is hard to accept/fit into other societies, especially as we get older. My suggestion: be content with what you have now, modern society with all its flaws, and if you want to opt out, just don't go to parties, watch TV, use the internet, read magazines, etc (all the devices of modern society) and don't use cell phones, etc. But that's kind of hard.

I moved to a small piece of rural West Virginia as soon as I could afford it. We aren't nearly so free as we used to be, but there is less "big brother" there than most places. The difficulty is that there are also less jobs. By living simply, heating with wood, not having heated running water, and having a large garden, we are able to enjoy a relatively high level of freedom from "modern society" without giving up the things I think are helpful. You need to work out your own balance. I drove a tractor trailer for a job. It was kind of neat, paid decently, and I managed to get home fairly regularly. If I had lived in a more civilized place, I could have arranged to be home more.

Modern day hermits are not uncommon, but I am willing to bet that the sacrifices one must make are not only impractical but dangerous. Giving up creature comforts is one thing, but opting out of "society" as a whole (read: social security, health care, paying taxes, etc.) would not be desirable. The easiest way I think would be to eschew the use of credit or debit cards and give up your computer and land telephone line. Easier said than done!

Buy a house in the country. Grow your own food, or buy it locally. Generate your own electricity, or do without. If you meet your needs by subsistence farming, you're unlikely to have to pay too many taxes. You might even get a government grant, though seeing as you're opting out of society better not take it.

I'm not certain that in TODAY'S society you could hide. There is just too much electronic stuff going on to be able to really hide if they really wanted to get to you for some reason. But I DO think that you can 'opt' out of society. Jehovah's Witnesses do it every day, in every thing just about that they do. They don't join military, they don't involve themselves with politics, they don't vote or salute the flag, they don't usually work in any capacity that would cause them to carry a gun, or hurt someone else, or steal, or lie, or miss their religious meetings. They don't subscribe to the worlds ideas of entertainment, marital arrangements, or lifestyles. They might just have what you are looking for... try contacting your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and speak to them of your concerns. See if they might have answers that would make sense to you!

Small scale farming, it's the only way, we can't survive off the land like we used to and now that we are so integrated into social communities we need others. Live on a farm, there's all kinds of family owned small ones that don't grown GMOs, ect. Oregon is nice!

I don't think it is possible, in Europe at least. No matter where you go you will have to interact with someone at least.
Saying that, though, you could easily move to a small, remote community, where outside contact is minimal.
I'm thinking of somewhere like the Hebrides, the Orkneys or, if you just don't want to see strangers and don't mind them looking at you, the Big Brother house!

Wouldn't that be just fantastic. Just get out of it all, live off the land. I know it's not very practical but isn't that just the dream.

The only way to opt out is to take a vow of silence.
