I always stick to what Whoopi says about this political correctness. She states that she has never been to Africa, therefore she is an American. Her color just happens to be black instead of white.

No, no no. Most do not mind at all. My way of thinking is that I am an American who is Black. I don't need some fancy term to describe myself. I always ask this question: If I am African American, then what are the Africans who acquire citizenship and become Americans? As yet, no one has answered that question. I agree with Whoppi; I am an American who is Black.
Just the other day at work this topic came up. One lady says she hates the terms Hispanic/Latina. She said she is Mexican. I have heard the same from Asians. The whole thing is just "over the top" nonsense!

No because we don't say Caucasian we just say white chick or white guy. Why butter it up? But African American however is the correct way to refer to a black person....and vice versa for white people.

Africans who are born in Africa do not consider African Americans real African..the only way to be an African American is to be BORN in Africa
same as German American
same as Mexican American ...
the country of your birth is your nationality...even Jewish born in European/Russia..are not Jewish by nationality...only by heritage not jus soli...jus sangus(blood)

It depends if you say it to them in an offensive way. To be honest i think black people....sorry "African Americans" get a bit too defensive and annoyed when refeered to as 'black people'. I dont know what it is but they as a race dont like it and i think the best thing to do is abide by them and refer to them as they wish to be reffered to, that way everyones happy.

Why not skip the whole thing and just refer to him by his given name? If you don't know his name, simply refer to him as "a gentleman". That is really the most polite thing to do.

no. People are becoming overly sensitive and minorities are demanding "rights". Call me a whitey, i don't care. I'll call you black, cos you are. I'll call you white, cos you are. Is it rude to call someone with fair hair blonde? People need to get over their complexes and look at each other!
