We don't know for certain, but she was a Greek-- not an Egyptian. The Ptolemy family took control of Egypt when Alexander the Great conquered it and Ptolemy was one of his generals. Cleopatra was one of the few in the family who even bother to learn the Egyptian language, which is one reason the people thought highly of her-- that, and she was also one of the few to adopt the Egyptian gods instead of the Greek. Her name is Greek, BTW.

A coin was found recently with her profile on it, and she is described as "thin lipped" with a pointy nose. The article is here:

Probably White (or pale Mulatto).

She was not descended from Egyptians (or any African or Semitic race). Her blood line was Macedonian. She was descended from Ptolemy I, a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great.

Of course, if the first Ptolemy's descendants had inter-married with Egyptians or other darker-skinned people, over the approximately 250 years between Ptolemy I and Cleopatra, the skin tint of the royal line would have taken on a darker tinge. But the Egyptian royal house did not inter-marry (at least, not officially). The ruler was always supposed to marry a close relative, preferably a brother or sister, in order to keep the blood line "pure" (!).

There being no photos of Cleopatra (except the Elizabeth Taylor version), the most likely answer is that she was White-skinned.

Since she was a Macedonian Greek whose family had intermarried for 300 years, she probably looked like other Macedonian Greek women: A Caucasian woman with olive complexion, dark hair and dark eyes.

Cleopatra VII was a direct descendant of Ptolemy I, who was a half brother to Alexander the Great. Following pharaonic tradition, brothers and sisters of this dynasty always intermarried. Cleopatra broke with tradition by having children with Roman husbands Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, but only after marrying her two half brothers who died young.
