It means that his overall capabilities tested on an IQ test (which tests things like visual discrimination, spatial ability, vocabulary knowledge, etc.) are higher than the average child his age. It is determined somewhat like a percentage (or used to be, not sure if it's still the case). So, if he had the abilities of an 8-year old, it would be 8/8 x 100 to have his IQ score. Since his IQ is 145, that means his abilities are roughly those of a child who is 11.6 years old.

However, IQ tests range widely in what the final score can be for an individual, and some tests only go as high as 130-140, so this may not be applicable anymore, but it gives you a rough idea. A percentile is a much more accurate result for an IQ test as it says what percentage of people who have taken the test are above or below that result. 145 is high on just about any test and would definitely be in the 90's somewhere (meaning, out of 100 people, at least 89 would score lower).

It also means that you are going to have to be very careful about his education and make sure he is challenged. It's very easy for a gifted child to take the easy route all the time because school is too easy most of the time.

Many people are surprised to learn they have an above average IQ, with the average score being 100. 1 in 50 people have an IQ in the top 2% of the population, making them eligible to join Mensa. To be regarded as a genius you need an IQ of 145 or over.

Well, it means he understands how things work. Doesn't mean he'll be a good student, that requires DOING work.

It means he'll be able to do things in the real world that other people fear.

He'll be able to take doors of machines and equipment, look inside and understand, eventually, what's going on and how to fix it.

He knows what a 3-D object looks like taken apart.

He can assembles a bicycle or dresser from Ikea, probably without looking at the blue prints or only referring to them once or twice when he gets confused.

It means he can probalby do your taxes better than H&R Block technicans IF he reads the book and IF he has the staying power.

See, if he doesn't then he won't do good in school.

High IQ but lack of ATTENTION SPAN=problems with the establishment.

High IQ, GOOD ATTENTION SPAN and WILLINGNESS TO FOLLOW ORDERS = high grades, but that don't make you smart.

High IQ, GOOD ATTENTION SPAN and a WILLINGNESS TO QUESTION THE ESTABLISHMENT and FOLLOW THROUGH with your gut feelings= Newton, Einstein, etc.

The person with the high IQ that sees the forrest for the trees is the one who reaches into the box when everyone else with all thier Masters Degrees are looking and scratching there head and sees something says: Is THAT really supposed to be in THAT position!

Then they move it and things work.

He can see the logic or illogic almost instantly or at least with a little examination.

IQ or Intelligence Quotient is an attempt to measure intelligence. This means many things to many people but generally the attribute of intelligence refers to concept mastery or sentience. Intelligence is often confused with knowledge, wisdom, memory, or a myriad of other attributes and in general has a variety of meanings depending on the context in which it is used. The term IQ usually refers to the attempt to measure a person's cognitive thinking ability.
There are many standard IQ tests in use around the world. On most intelligence tests, average IQ score is 100, but some tests give different numerical values, in the same way that the same temperature is expressed by different numerical values on the Fahrenheit and Celsius and Kelvin scales.

One way of comparing scores from different IQ tests is to convert them to a ranking, or percentile, score which tells you in which band. A percentile score of 99% means that you are in the top 1%, a percentile score of 98% puts you in the top 2% and so on.

Child scores are not as accurate as scores for fully mature adults.

Scores are, if administered correctly accurate to approx one third of a standard deviation.

So check what sd was used and look at the percentile score.

IQ test methods are variable, that is different for people from different age group, when your son has scored 145(above 100), it means he is very capable of manage & perfom tasks at pre-assumed situtations relevant to his age. It could also be taken, that he has higher capacity, or he could execute a task better than a normal child of same age group. IQ is very relative.

It means you should have him properly tested by a psychologist to accurately assess his intelligence. If his IQ is unusually high, he would benefit from an accelerated learning program.
