I have a 93' plymouth sundance, and the brake light comes on when I step on the brake; I just replaced the pads thinking this was the problem. When I let off the brake the light goes out. However not always, sometimes it stays on, but if I pump the pedal, it goes back out. The brake pedal also feels a little "spongy" and as far as I can tell the front brakes don't work at all.

you seem to have a hydraulic leak in the front brake system.....there is a combination hydraulicproportioning valve that will cut off the front or rear hydraulic system in the event of a pressure failure......air in the system will make it feel spongy...the proportioning valve has a sensor that detects pressure losses & automaticaly cuts off the affected system & turn,s on the warning light.........check all hydraulic hoses, line,s,& fitting,s,caliper,s,& master cylinder.....repair leak,s &bleed system.....the fact that the warning light go,s out when you pump the pedal indicate,s you have a very small leak...this may be hard to locate......also check the combination valve itself....hope this help,s........good luck!

In all honesty you have a problem with your braking system. Pads will probably need replacing or the brake disks or drums.
The fact that the light goes out when you pump the pedal points to ether a lack of brake fluid (check this under the bonnet) or a broken master cylinder which distributes the fluid to the brakes at the wheels. If I were you I would not drive the car.
Check the brake fluid first if all is well then take off the wheels on one side of the front. Make sure you turn the wheel totally to the opposite side of the wheel you are taking off. So turn the wheels left if you are taking off the right wheel.
Look at the pads on the callipers on the discs. If they are worn then that could indicate your problem some cars from around that year have an electronic metal sensor that tells you when your pads have run out if you have less than say one inch on the pad (you will see the pad backing as a big flat piece and the actually pad is the chunk attachted to the wheel disc) then you need to replace those pads.
As for the master cylinder well you really need to see a mechanic for this. Its not really a home project. Make sure that the braking sytems is bled as air in the system can cause the problems also.
Quick note!!!!!
Do not get brake fluid near your paint!!!!!
It will strip it back to the metal!

You might need brake fluid, your brake line might be leaking, you might need to check to see if whoever put the brakes on released the air from them right, you might have air in the lines still. In this case though dont keep pumping the brakes just to get the light to go off.

Maybe some brake fluid could help, the brake lines might need to be replaced. If you've already replaced the pads, check the manual for troubleshooting issues.

It sounds as though you have a leakage in your break master cylindar. If a break master cylinder is leaking externally or internally (pedal slowly sinks to floor), it must be rebuilt or replaced. You should take it to a mechanic for a brake job where they can do a full inspection.

Balance valve is off center. This valve turns on when there is a sudden surge of fluid in one direction. You will need to a bleed the brakes till the light goes out. There is a plunger on the balance valve that I have been able to take a wire cutter pliers and grab the valve and move it in or out, depending on the direction of the surge of fluid. Hope this helps.

Whoever changed the pads may not have bled the brakes or not did it well enough. Since you say it feels spongy that would be my guess

check the brake fluid. did you bleed the brakes when you changed the pads. did you check the rear brakes? check for a fluid leak

Either it is low on brake fluid or the brakes need bleeding.
