It means that his overall capabilities tested on an IQ test (which tests things like visual discrimination, spatial ability, vocabulary knowledge, etc.) are higher than the average child his age. It is determined somewhat like a percentage (or used to be, not sure if it's still the case). So, if he had the abilities of an 8-year old, it would be 8/8 x 100 to have his IQ score. Since his IQ is 145, that means his abilities are roughly those of a child who is 11.6 years old. However, IQ tests range widely in what the final score can be for an individual, and some tests only go as high as 130-140, so this may not be applicable anymore, but it gives you a rough idea. A percentile is a much more accurate result for an IQ test as it says what percentage of people who have taken the test are above or below that result. 145 is high on just about any test and would definitely be in the 90's somewhere (meaning, out of 100 people, at least 89 would score lower). It also means that you are going to have to be very careful about his education and make sure he is challenged. It's very easy for a gifted child to take the easy route all the time because school is too easy most of the time.

Many people are surprised to learn they have an above average IQ, with the average score being 100. 1 in 50 people have an IQ in the top 2% of the population, making them eligible to join Mensa. To be regarded as a genius you need an IQ of 145 or over.

IQ, intelligence quotient, basically that for his age vs. knowledge and ability to digest knowledge, and possibly to diagnose and think things out, he is on the high end of ability. A high IQ generally means a person has the potential for great learning and thinking power. If it is developed...i.e. continually challenged with reading and other learning pursuits it can continue to be high or grow. If not it will lower as he gets older. I had a very high IQ at a young age but an IQ can diminsh if one doesn't continue to grow in knowledge vs. age. Contact MENSA, they can put this in relative terms better.

145 means he is very smart, but how many IQ tests is this based on? if it is just one test it could be a fluke. have him take 3 to 5 tests and get an average. my daughter does IQ tests and her scores can vary up to 20 points

IQ means nothing, much more important is EQ or emotional quotient (the way he deals with situations and other people)
Generally this is a much better indicator of how far he will go in life...
