What do you think should be done about the gun laws in our country? Complete banning of everything from bb guns and air rifles to weapons that fire proper ammunition or re legalisation of handguns and every other weapon but with better control and licencing.
The way it is just now i believe just allows criminals access to guns whilst law abiding shooters are robbed of there sport and are made to sound like maniacs. I know there are a lot of crazy people out there who shouldnt be allowed a gun and this is where the better licencing and control should come in. Whats your opinion?
Before people refer to the USA look at other countries like Switzerland which has a very high gun owning population. Its down to culture and training. If people are trained to respect guns and there correct use I think it would lower gun crime. Its basic human mentality that the more your told you cant have somethingthe more you want it.

I'm afraid you dont know much about this subject at all people. You are all comparing the USA. Look at other countries like Switzerland and Canada. Also guns are getting into the hands of criminals anyway so if you legalise them law abiding shooters will have guns to continue there sport and if a registered firearm is used in a crime it is traceable back to the other. Most gun crime is commited with unregistered(illegal) firearms.

billythekidd- Ironic that your name is that of someone who lived and died with guns. I dont want a handgun because they are illegal I want one beacuse I enjoy the sport of shooting. I do not want to obtain one illegaly because i'm not a criminal and dont wish to go to jail.

There are now more hand guns in the UK, than before Hungerford. The law before required a license from a magistrate, and a annual visit from the Police to check it was being kept safely and securely. Its a sport i tried in my youth target shooting, but didn't enjoy. If people wish to participate in such a sport and follow all the old rules and regulations then that freedom should be there's not left as it is know to criminals

Guns, with the exception of air rifles and to a lesser extent shotguns are VERY illegal in the UK. The government even had to make special legislation so that the shooting competitions at the olympics could take place. In order to buy a gun you must have "good reason" - you can't just buy one. You must have legitimate sporting or work-related interests in owning a gun. Self defence is _NOT_ a valid reason. Handguns are almost entirely illegal - so that would rule out concealed weapons. Even the British pistol shooting team for the olympics CANNOT train in Britain because of these very strict laws. Being caught with an unliscenced gun carries a penalty of 5 years in prison (and as nobody who has been in prison more then 3 years can own a gun also means you can no longer own one) and an unlimited fine.

In South Africa we are going through a re-licensing process at the moment. It's true that every man and his dog has a gun here for obvious reasons. In the countries that you mention its pretty well controlled by law and policing, fact of the matter is that one cannot rob a bank with a French loaf and there will always be criminals. I think that the gun manufacturers should play a larger role in the control on the movement of their products and of course more severe penalties if you get caught with an un-licensed weapon. In SA we are reluctant to hand in our weapons as they find their way to the criminal circuit by corrupt officials and our police force is still not what it should be (not their fault) so we kind of want to keep protection of family and goods in our own hands. We have thousands of rapes and murders per year, unlike Switzerland and the UK. Yep, law and policing!

In the UK all handguns were banned after the Dunblane shootings in the mid 90's.
It is illegal to own or possess a handgun, thats the law.
How can you tighten up a law which already says NO HANDGUNS at all, for any reason.
Even the British olympic shooting team has to travel abroad to practice.
Which begs the question, How will the olympics manage a shooting competition in the UK ?

Your question raises points that I and the NRA have made for years. I am an older adult who has owned guns, rifles, shotguns and handguns all of my adult life. I have NEVER even had the urge to pull a gun in anger (and I do get angry, VERY angry).
The value of LIFE has much to do with gun crime as do the penalties of such.
I have long been aware of the restrictions in the UK and am glad that WE won the war.
Good Luck

In the UK we have far less gun crime than in the USA and this is because guns are extremely hard to get hold of. Legalising them will make things worse.
EDIT: unfortunately the UK is not like Switzerland. They have nearly abolished poverty; we haven't even come close. With the violent youth culture we have here, relaxing gun laws would cause a bloodbath.

The Swiss are a small rich nation, with high-employment, and with an excellent education system.
Most of the low-paid jobs in Switzerland are taken by temporary "migrant" workers, who do not have permanent rights of residency... so the Swiss can boot them out whenever they wanted and have little rights on social security/health/ system.
Therefore the Swiss are much less likely to resort to crime of any kind. (I'm sure I remember a Swiss religious cult whose members were found shot to death in Switerland in the mid 90s) You can't say its culture and training... its also money, greed, upbringing, environment.
Keep UK's complete (almost) ban of firearms imo. If you want a firearm more because its illegal that's your problem... at the risk of prison for having it illegally.

it doesnt matter how many laws there are made against guns, and how harsh the punishment is. guns will always end up in this country and always end up in someones hands (a criminal). although it is hard to import guns into the UK, its not impossible, and loads of guns come in through various channels.
