I have purchased a chemical named Tarax from France, will this help to break down the waste and/or help maintain the life expectancy of the pit? I have it emptied a couple of times per year, yet some other people in the area haven't emptied theirs for years?!?!

The idea of a cesspool as opposed to a septic tank is so that you do not need to empty it. The idea is to let nature take it's course and break down the waste over a period of time. You can buy certain chemicals to help the process, and i believe the planting of bulrushes also helps. You should log on to a site that will tell you more.

A cesspool leaches waste out through the grout and brick, a septic tank has leach lines that spread out over a large area.
