1b) Use rough work
1c) Get feedback, encouragement, and advice.
1d) To get really impressively good may take 10 years or much longer unless you have extremely high ability. Even if you have very high ability in this area, you will need to practise communicating your results.
2) Ability
3) External motivation e.g. money

For all levels of ability, practise is needed, if only to communicate the solutions clearly and unambiguously to other people.

Ask For Help
Learn Formulae
Practice on past papers (and ask for help if there is trouble)

if you do the last one you will know the exact method

mmm... actually, patince is the key to success in math...
based on experience (actually, i was once chosen to compete in a math contest), all i did was to study, and answer questions... just read and read and try to answer problems! as i have said patience is the key here!
