The Gameboy Micro can only play GBA games, as it's small size has room for only one of the GameBoy chips. (The GBA and GBA SP have two chips, one for GBA and one for Gameboy/GB Color). If you are considering a GBA only handheld with small size, the GBA SP V2 (with brighter screen than the old GBA SP). Otherwise, a DS or DS Lite is good, but the old DS is quite large and the DS Lite's GBA slot is small making the GBA cartridge stick out a bit, and the DS's can only play GBA games in single player mode, no multi-player.
And, I'd like to correct the previous answerer's comment about the DS being able to play Gameboy color games. The DS can only play DS and GBA games, GBA games in single player only. No Gameboy Color or Gameboy games.

No, I bought mine thinking it did, I didn't need it to, but it would have made it more fun, considering I just found my old school pokemon games, i.e red, yellow, etc.. If you enjoy playing game boy advance and color games, I would actually pitch in a little more and get a DS lite, its small and portable like the micro, but plays color, advance, and its own, DS games.

no. Those game cartridges are almost as big as the micro. It would make no sense.
