I've been a vegetarian for many yrs because I never liked the taste of meat & when I ate it before it hurt my stomach & made me sick or have to RUN to the bathroom if you know what I mean. There are other reasons why it's not a bad idea to be, but I never try to convert meat-eaters or say they're wrong. It doesn't bother me if you eat it. I don't like to, but it's only a personal/taste preference of mine.
Why do many ppl try to make me feel bad/stupid/wrong/weird about it? They'll be sarcastic & say they can't eat meat in front of me so I'm hard to eat with (no one argues this to someone who doesn't like the onions or is lactose-intolerant, so why say it to me?). Even if I say it's not a moral thing & I don't mind, ppl have said things like, "Well, I just feel like I can't eat in front of you now. I don't know why you just don't eat meat." Ppl say I HAVE to for proper nutrition which isn't true. I have one of the most balanced diets out of people I know (I'm conscious of taking care of my body so I get all nutrients I need), I enjoy it, & I'm very physically fit, so I don't see the problem. My family & some friends try to force me to eat it & belittle me if I don't. I don't get it. I just don't like the taste! My boyfriend doesn't like pickles but no one says he's crazy, forces him or makes him feel bad for it. Why is there a constant uphill-battle about this w/meat-eaters when I don't preach nor force my preferences on anyone? I'm asking because it's not fun having the same discussions, being put down, dealing with sarcasm, etc., esp. with the same ppl. I'd like to know what it'll take to accept that it's just a food I don't like, not a rebellion/denial of my roots/in-style for this week/etc., because nicely explaining it rarely seems to work. :(

I am a vegetarian myself but I am for the reason that I think I can get all nutrients from veggies alone & not by having to eat meat for that matter. I have had many explanations to do & people raising their voices together with their eyebrows when they hear me speak about animal cruelty. They think I am stupid. They kept asking me why I dont eat meat, so they deserve an answer, dont they? But if they dont like the answer, or end up losing what seems to be a battle of "should i swallow or should i not swallow" game, we are all of a sudden on the "DONT INVITE" list. I am in the same boat with you and I do understand exactly what you mean. I do question myself too why people get bothered when one dont eat meat but dont really care when they hear someone who doesnt eat veggies. It is our own personal preference & one should respect that. It is not because we want to prove something about ourselves, but we do it because we have our reasons. Weather you are allergic, you feel sick, you think it is cruelty... you just cant! And what hurts the most is that when you are expecting support from the people who are closest to you, you find yourself pulling away from them just not to create misunderstandings about what you can and cant eat. Sounds petty but it isnt. Do you think they think we feel superior because we have a will power not to touch meat? Do you think they are jealous because we can say no to cancer? Do you think they find us boring because we wont share a plate with anyone who does eat meat? Do you think they cant stand someone who doesnt agree that animals are not to eat because they love fried chicken so much? Whatever answers they have to these questions, (maybe they even think we are crazy) this is the only thing i have decided my entire life that doesnt need any explanation. What matters is you are not the one going crazy checking on what or what not other people eat. We do these because you are allergic, you dont like the taste of it, you are compassionate to animals, you look after your health... whats wrong with these reasons? The more people mock me, make fun of me, question my faith... they just make me feel like my heart gained another kilo! So lets both enjoy our meal, relax & cheers to you! Smile with me!!! =)

I'm a vegetarian too, for the same reasons as you, and I just chill. I know what you mean, people make stupid jokes and stuff, but you just gotta relax. Crack jokes back at them. Or just take the whatever approach... no matter what you try, people will always be ignorant.

You my dear shouldn't have to explain yourself. do what is right for you, you are not with the right people if they criticize you. Friends understand and idiots don't and are critical. If you can't give them up, eat alone...but the most important thing is you DON'T have to explain yourself, just smile and do what you do....
