Soap water can be used as a nature friendly way to get rid of an ant problem. Pouring soap water on an ant trail destroys the ant's sense of smell and the scent the ants were following to get to the food.

Are they the tiny ants that smell like coconut oil if you smash them--sugar ants--we had an infestation of them that got worse every year. Trails of ants were everywhere. Finally figured out they were lodging in the house but feeding on the sap from a pin oak tree. These trees secrete a sort of sticky sap mist the ants like to eat. If you park under a pin oak you will see the stuff on your windshield. Sprayed insecticide under the tree every few weeks and the ants stopped. Maybe you have a sugar source nearby you haven't identified.

Ok, here's some suggestions...
The first line of defense is to remove the attractants: keep counters free of crumbs and sticky spots.
Another preventative step is to kill the scouts as soon as you see them, and then wipe up with soapy water.
Baby powder...sprinkle the area/block the area where they come in. The ants can't walk through the powder and it is non-toxic
Sprinkle powdered red chili pepper, paprika, dried peppermint or borax on ant trails, in cracks and near entryways to deter them from moving in.
TIPS:
Getting rid of ants in your house:
1.Do the dishes regularly.
2.Wipe down your kitchen counters with bleach water every night.
3.Clean your room and pick up food wrappers.
4.Seal door sills, window sills, and mend broken screens.
5 Mop floors with bleach regularly.
6.Put food and leftovers (especially sweets) in proper containers.
7.Take out the trash as often as possible.

Ants become a nuisance when they enter homes. Instead of spending money on costly pest control, you can get rid of ants by removing the food source and using soap water.

In UK you can get a small plastic bottle (no much bigger than a nail varnish bottle) - its called NIPPON - its contains a yellowish syrup which is sweet but poisonous, it attracts the ants. Just put a small drop on a piece of card - they ingest the syrup and of course it kills them. Its better than spray. You should be able to buy the equivalent to Nippon where you live.

We have used a product that we bought from Lowe's or Home Depot. It is a gel that has sugar in it to attract them and some sort of poison. So, they are attracted to it, eat it and take it back to their nest and share it with all the others and die. I do not remember the name, I believe it is in orange packaging with black writing.

Add baking soda to any food substance that is attracting the ants.
When they eat the food and injest the baking soda, their stomachs burst.

Windex will kill them and eliminate their pheromone trail. They will re-establish the trail which necessitates Windexing again, but eventually they will give up and move on.
