I know that Jews have been in England since Cromwell despensed with a law banning Jews from living in here, but where did those new Jewish immigrants come from and where have any subsequent Jewish immigrations come from?

Hello,

(ANS) Its my understanding that the jews exsisted well before Cromwell's time here in England. There are records for the exsistence of Jews in the city of York that predate Cromwell by hundreds of years.

**There were jews who came to England from Spain, and there have been many jews who came from across europe as a whole. I dont think you can say for certain precise dates or places where jews came from. But jews emigrated from many places to avoid anti semitism.

**Obviously, there were in more recent times during the second world war many jewish people who fled Germany, Poland & other countries to escape Hilter & the Nazi's.

**There were also jews who fled Russia before the start of the first world war, to escape the pogroms of the cossacs, etc.

**My family came to the UK from Russia in 1911 to escape the genocide that was going on at that time. Its a far more common story than most people realise.

It is likely whether there was a law or not England would have had a population of Jews.
Alot of Jewish immigration in the last couple of hundred years has been from Europe, traditionally there has been stronger discrimination there, especially Eastern Europe.
The Jewish people up until fairly recently in historical terms have been a people without a land.
It stands to reason then that most Jewish people are indiginous to the countries where they live.
It's a bit harsh to say that Jewish people who have lived in this country over the last 300 years are immigrants, your family history may not stretch back that far!

The first lot were Shephardic Jews from Spain and N.Africa. the famous boxing champ Daniel Mendoza was one. At the end of the 19th century a second wave began, Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe.
