What are the checkpoints to tell if a Beta Black Lotus is real?

This one can be complicated. The first are visual clues--if the card doesn't match up to another card from the same set in terms of print quality, then you have a possible red flag. (Just make sure they are the same exact set, as the quality between Alpha/Beta/Unlimited varies greatly.) Also, if you have a microscope, you can peer down. Magic cards are printed with hexagons. Most printers don't work like that.

All that said, the best way of figuring out whether the thing is real is the most dangerous. If you bend just about all cardboard in half, is creases. Magic cards are different; if you bend the top of the card to the bottom of a real one, you'll just temporarily warp the cardboard. Given the possibility of doing this wrong, I'd advise against it.

At the end of the day, if I were you, I would just take it to an experienced dealer and see what they have to say. It's their business, after all.

Go to magicthegathering.com and use "the Gatherer." When the search window opens type in "Black Lotus." When the results show up, click the Beta Set Symbol to the right of each result. A window should open and show an authentic Card picture.

Good Luck to you.

Compare it to a Newer card, and if the cards corners are not as Pointy as the newer card. Plus it might be somewhat faded from play. If it is in Perfect Mint Condition. Send it to a grading company to be graded because it probably is a fake as the card was made almost 11 yrs ago. The Edges in Beta aren't as round as Alpha I believe. Still the best way to find out is go to a reputable Dealer or Grading Service and see what they have to say.
