Everyone seems to make a big deal about making sure my baby (5.5 weeks) gets her "tummy time" to strengthen her shoulders, neck, etc. But she just kinda lays there. If she DOES start to move her head and pick it up she just gets really frustrated quickly and I end up picking her up either way. WHen she is laying on my chest on her stomach, she pulls up and looks around. But how important IS the tummy time at this age? Is it more advice for an older baby or will she never get that strength if she isn't placed on her stomache? I guess I am asking, HOw long should this tummy time be each day and can I skip it until she gets stronger or does she really need it to "get stronger"?

I am not in a hurry. My question is because the doctor, WIC, other moms, etc tell me to make sure she is getting tummy time...and I don't want to force it so I don't...

tummy time is pretty important. we had my daughter on her belly for about an hour a day. and now she's more mobile and active than other babies that are older than her. All children are different, but I think that it played a roll in it. ANd yes, they can get frustrated. Young babies are boring - they do just lay there lol

Neck strength is an important developemental milestone at this age & tummy time helps develop this. My babies never enjoyed tummy time but i too put them on their tummies each day & listened to them scream. Just do it a couple of times a day for a couple of minutes & try not to worry to much about it. All my kids were crawling, talking & walking by 12 months & i never persisted with this tummy time stuff.

I never did this. They figure this out on their own and strength comes naturally.
