This is the engine management light and can come on for the littlest of thing`s such as a blown brake light bulb ,so don`t go thinking the worst case scenario until you get it checked out ,
The only main time to worry is if you are losing power when when the light is on whilst you are driving , this means the car has gone into limp mode ( safety mode ) and you need to have it checked sooner rather than later ,
a common fault on these car`s is the abs sensor wire breaking ,

This is the check engine light. It most often results when an engine sensor goes bad or the connection to the sensor has a problem. The car is then in limp mode and not running smoothly. resulting in less power and fuel economy. Depending on the sensor that goes bad. The tps / throttle postion sensor is a major one when it goes bad the car will surge have little power and not idle well or at all. it meters the proper fuel to air ratio . The exhaust gas sensor is the another major one which meters the fuel to air intake also .

Most modern cars have 5 -15 sensors which give readings to the ecm / engine control module . The ecm is the brain and the sensors tell the computer how to increase decrease fuel and air flow and then to advance or retard the spark advance/ timing . This is the simple breakdown though. It is a very complex system in all modern fuel injected cars.

Its a light to tell you that you've been incredibly stupid and bought a Freelander.

You must now return it to a garage and shell out a couple of thousand pounds for a new engine and gearbox.

These lights come on every so often and will continue to do so until you realise the error of your ways and sell it on to another unsuspecting mug.
Or scrap it!
Or pour petrol over it and set it on fire and claim off the insurance.
Or push it off a cliff.
Or have someone "steal" it.
Or generally give up on it and let it rust away to nothing on your drive.

it means you should have read the owners manual, if you had you would know that this is the check engine light? what leads you to believe that this is a head gasket? have you ran it hot or without anti-freeze? usually when this comes on it is a bad reading on an electrical sensor. have the code read, free at most major auto parts stores, or take it to the dealer

Engine management light does not necessarily mean head gasket

ECU has recorded a fault within the system and an OBD system check is required to establish the fault before jumping to any conclusion

its not the head gasket this time, (it will go tho, give it time), you need to get a diagnostic test done to confirm which of the sensors is playing up
