However.... Jesus is the most important event on this little world.

Technologies, such as the steam and internal combustion engines, providing power and mobility far beyond what could previusly be achieved by human or animal power even with tackles and gears, I think were the most important changes. But I don't think it necessarily moved us to a higher level of civilisation. It depends on how one defines civilisation. Knowledge and power aren't wisdom. We've applied our technologies to war, competitive exploitation and destruction of the eco-system that makes life on Earth possible - and in spite of personal freedom and widespread education in the West, with the whole history and thought of humanity available, the mass of people live in ignorance, thoughtlessness, and avoidance, and live mostly for immediate personal gratification, sought dominantly through the acquisition of material goods or entertainments, made desirable by manipulative advertising. So, civilised? Urbanised, rather. But all isn't lost, yet!

The recognition that slavery is immoral and should end. Slavery was the economic foundation of all ancient empires, such as the Athenian and the Roman. The major event in the ending of slavery was not Lincoln's but the end of serfdom in Russia, which emancipated twenty times as many as what took place in America at about the same time.

Until the last three or four hundred years to kill someone required risks of being within reach of enemy weapons and skill or luck deciding who was victor. The change began with gunpowder introduction into western civilizations. It started slowly but as weapon technology developed longer kill ranges skill and luck
proved less than equal. Gunpowder was superseded by new
weapons but the 'sticking point' of previous ages no longer applies. Bayonet charges are now the tactic of last resort. Winners write the history, like it or not.

The event that had the greatest impact was the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.
After that, I'd have to say the style of government used by the Romans.
After that, the industrial revolution.
After that, England's invention of the "corporation" and the beginning of capital markets.

Generally speaking: No more fear of Gods. No more commitment to country. No more free thinking and perspective. Everything in the world is done for us now with the click of a mouse button.
Society at large has become lazy and complacent.
