Waylon Jennings and Ritchie Valens were involvewd in the coin toss.
Waylon Jenings Lost!
Jennings also is famous for narrowly escaping death on the most tragic night in rock and roll history. He was the temporary bass player for Buddy Holly's Crickets on that fateful night in 1959 when Buddy's plane crashed in Clear Lake, Iowa - killing Buddy, Ritchie Valens, J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper), and the pilot.

Legend has it that Jennings "lost" a coin toss with Buddy Holly deciding who would ride in the plane and who was stuck on a cold bus with a broken heater. The true version of the story is that Waylon gallantly gave up his seat on the plane to The Big Bopper - who was suffering from a cold.
