He was trying to explain black body radiation ... Look it up. He had no luck for years. He guessed that light energy could only take on certain quanta of value and got the right answer. He had no idea why .. it was a desperation guess. A few years later some theory filled in behind his guess including some work by Albert E.

Had to do with the problem of "black body" radiation but I don't remember the details. It was soon shown that his constant "h" was related to a mathematical relationship between the emission lines of excited hydrogen and I seem to recall Albert Einstein used it in his explanation of the photoelectric effect. Planck did not discover the theory, he was probably the "inventor" of it.
